the new york rangers seem to have finally found their match for a head coach long-term.
after a few coaching changes every few years, alain vigneault has been the most consistent since coming to new york in 2013. with a year left in his contract, the rangers' organization extended him for 3 more years. the extension was announced on the team's official twitter account on january 31st. without stating the extension length, the account followed with tweets about vigneault's success with the blueshirts. "i feel i have never been more driven than i am at this point," vigneault said according to the rangers' twitter account. since taking over the helm before the 2013-2014 season, vigneault leads all rangers' head coaches (with a minimum of 100 games coached) in point percentage in franchise history with .632. under vigneault, the rangers rank 3rd in the NHL and lead the eastern conference in wins with 175. vigneualt is 175-97-23 as the rangers' head coach. in his 1st season, the rangers reached the 2014 stanley cup final - 20 years after winning it all. however, they lost to the los angeles kings in 5 games. the terms of the contract extension have not been confirmed but ESPN.com reported that it would be $12.25 million over the next 3 seasons, $4 million in 2017-18 and 2018-19 and then $4.25 million in 2019-20. so far this season, the rangers are 31-17-1 and 4th in the metropolitan division. they've totaled 165 goals, which is the 2nd-most in the NHL. the 2nd-half of the season starts tonight and the rangers are up against former coach john tortorella and the columbus blue jackets.
